What is local giving?

Local giving schemes encourage people to give (or give more!) to their local area, communities, charities, and causes.

Local giving schemes look different in different places. This is because they respond to the needs and goals of residents, and build on the strengths and assets which already exist in the area.

Some activities that local giving schemes might do include:

  • raise funds through campaigns, events, or partnerships with businesses
  • use this money to make grants to charities or communities that work in the local area
  • support local residents to get involved in fundraising and grant-making decisions
  • connect volunteer opportunities to the right people or businesses
  • connect organisations who can work together on local issues
  • facilitate other kinds of giving – like space, resources or expertise – across the borough

In London, the local giving movement – sometimes called place-based-giving – is growing. Supported by London Funders, many boroughs have their own local giving scheme. This map shows which schemes are running or are under development.

Between 2017 and 2019 London’s Giving schemes generated £4.49m in income and an additional £1.1.m of value through volunteer and in-kind giving.
People have to feel like they matter and have a voice. Place-based giving is about devolving power to communities and trusting them to make decisions. It’s a different way of working, collaborating with people who know and care deeply about their boroughs.
